AAUW Greensboro Public Policy and Outreach chair, Laura Tew, pictured here with her husband Christopher, has arranged this AAUW evening at EMF to honor their student scholarship recipients Alvaro Miranda Gamarra from Peru and Rosa Balderrama from Bolivia, shown here with violist Julia Reparip from Orlando. Alvaro and Rosa will be sitting first and second chair in the cello section, their first opportunity to lead the section.

The concert program will include Bill Wolfram, renowned pianist and EMF faculty member, performing Rhapsody in Blue. Also on the program is the familiar Tchaikovsky Selections from Act II of the Nutcracker, under the batons of EMF Conducting Scholars.

The program will conclude with Shostakovich with the E-flat major triumphant Ninth Symphony. The program notes are riveting and leads us through the disturbing war years to this “light, classically inspired symphony brimming with Shostakovich’s unique brand of darkly satirical subtext that certainly contributed to his condemnation by the Soviet Party in 1948.”

As women who have fought battles and held our ground for decades, we can share Shostakovich’s need to call out and ridicule the rascals. There is plenty of opportunity for youthful performers to express their talents with “frenetic energy” ending “with a hectic and emotionally unresolved coda.”
