Tribute to Mary Woodrow August 28, 2022

Mary Elliott Woodrow, age 76, of Greensboro, passed away on August 24, 2022.

A funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, September 1, 2022, at Canterbury School Chapel, located at 5400 Old Lake Jeanette Rd., Greensboro, NC. A private graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 3901 Forest Lawn Drive, Greensboro, NC on Friday, September 2, 2022, at 11 a.m.

Mary was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She graduated from the Brearley School in New York City and then went on to Swarthmore College, where she graduated with a BA in history. Mary met her husband Terry at Swarthmore and they married after graduation in the summer of 1967. She lived in Birmingham, Alabama for 30 years, where she raised her family and worked as a morning show host for WBHM 90.3 FM, the classical radio station in town. She volunteered for numerous organizations and served as president of both the Junior Board of the Birmingham Music Club and of the American Association for University Women (AAUW).

A voracious lifelong reader, Mary passionately led the book group for the AAUW chapters in both Birmingham and Greensboro for many years. She traveled extensively in the United States and abroad, and especially enjoyed visiting art museums and churches in Europe, South and Central America. An avid birder, Mary was an enthusiastic member of the National Audubon Society and visited Costa Rica and Venezuela on nature expeditions. Though intellectual by nature, Mary had the rare gift of seamlessly connecting with others in any social interaction, from the most casual and beyond. She enjoyed visiting the coast, attending her grandchildren’s school, and sporting events, completing the New York Times crossword, and always enjoyed being around her favorite dog, golden retrievers.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 55 years, Terry Woodrow, daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Jacob, their children Joshua and Elliott, her son Andrew and daughter-in-law Anna, sister-in-law Tracy Elliott, nephew Nathan and her niece Rachel.

She was preceded in death by her father, Reverend Charles Alfred Elliott, her mother Elizabeth Lukens Elliott, and her brother Charles Sumner Elliott.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Planned Parenthood of America and BackPack Beginnings in Greensboro. Special thanks to Bobbie Euliss at Fresenius Medical Care and Dr. Dalton McLean for their support and care.
