AAUW SPRING LUNCHEON – APRIL 25, 2015
SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARDS: During 2014 – 2015, members of our branch collectively donated over $2,000 to AAUW National funds. Today we are recognizing three of our members who have been exemplary in their vision, leadership and support of our mission by designating these funds in their honor.
THE WILLA LAWRENCE AWARD TO SUE MENGERT: (certificate) This award recognizes sustained leadership. Willa Lawrence was a former Greensboro branch member who was involved in many branch activities. Like Willa, Sue is always there to help and take the leadership when a job needs to be done. As a board member, Sue has been the Chair of the Liaison Committee with our College and University Partners. Under her leadership, our Triad College and University Partners has grown to four, UNCG, Guilford College, Bennett College and High Point University, and Sue is working on making connections with more. She has recruited and lead a committee to implement programs like NCCWSL and $tart $mart in four college/university partners, as well as participating in “Elect-Her Training Workshops. For her outstanding service to our branch, we are pleased to contribute $500 to AAUW National funds in Sue Mengert’s honor.
THE MARY FLOYD AWARD TO LAURA TEW: (certificate) This award was established to recognize a member who has contributed beyond her position on the Board, the “above and beyond” award, if you will. Laura, as Public Policy and Advocacy Chair, has expanded our role in the community by tracking issues important to our branch at the local and state levels, implementing advocacy strategies, and connecting us to organizations with shared missions, such as the Community Foundation and The League of Women Voters. Laura has brought our branch into the world of technology by creating our website, connecting us on Facebook and Twitter, and emailing members branch news with her monthly “Notes”. Beyond her role as chief communicator, Laura has also been a successful grant writer and marketing advocate on our behalf. For her outstanding service to our branch, we are pleased to contribute $500 to AAUW National funds in Laura Tew’s honor.
THE SHIRLEY HALL AWARD TO DR. DEEPSHIKA SHUKLA: (certificate) this award is presented to recognize an exemplary contribution by a new member of our branch. Deepshika worked tirelessly to help organize and implement the very successful Triad Tech Savvy day long workshop for girls in grades 6 -9 at UNCG this March. She jumped right into the planning of the second year of Tech Savvy and helped make it even bigger and better than the year before. As a Nuclear Physicist, Deepshika keenly feels the need to introduce more girls to STEM subjects. Her energy and enthusiasm surely contributed to this goal in Tech Savvy. For her outstanding contribution to our branch as a new member, we are pleased to contribute $500 to AAUW National funds in Dr. Deepshika Shukla’s honor.
