Sisters of Mine is a powerful, staged theatrical production highlighting the
struggles of the courageous and resolute women of North Carolina to obtain equal
rights. More than100 years ago, women were granted the right to vote in the 19 th
amendment of the U. S. Constitution on August 26, 1920. Yet the challenges continue
as women confront persistent gender equity issues today.
The Shared Radiance Performing Arts Company was commissioned by AAUW NC to
create and perform a play highlighting the events and women who pioneered the right to
vote, with a special focus on the contributions of North Carolina women. The cast
researched and wrote the stories of Asian, Black, Jewish, Native American, Immigrant
Irish, and White Americans to provide authentic views of the quest for equality.
However, not every American woman was granted the right to vote then, and this
injustice for women of color is also clearly portrayed. Sherri Raeford, the Artistic
Director of Shared Radiance, composed an original song, based on the poem Sisters of
Mine by Barbara Henderson.
Sadly, Covid cancelled the performance of Sisters of Mine to celebrate Women’s
Equality Day at the Governor’s Mansion in 2020, but the AAUW Greensboro Branch has
recommissioned the production to highlight today’s equity issues for women.
A reception and refreshments will follow the performance providing an opportunity for
conversation with the actors and among members of the audience. We’re still
celebrating Women’s Equality Day, but the question remains of how equity can finally be
achieved.
