Project Name: Empowering Young Women in STEM
Empowering Young Women in STEM is a project to expand the reach of the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) to young women in the Triad area of North Carolina. The FRC program offers high-school students the opportunity to work alongside professional mentors to create a business plan and to build a sophisticated robot for competition. FRC’s goal is to engage more young women in order to begin to achieve better equity in STEM fields.

Project Name: Women in Nontraditional Careers WINC
Women in Nontraditional Careers (WINC) will provide help to promote career training for underemployed and unemployed women in Guilford County in order to help fill the projected new jobs for welders in the region. The primary focus of the WINC initiative is to provide an introductory course on welding that prepares women students to be prepared to complete a postsecondary credential.

Pauli Tashima works on commentarial traditions in early medieval China, focusing on the reception of the early Chinese text the Zuo Tradition. Her research, which will result in a book of her own, traces the process by which this text gained or lost authority under various political, intellectual, and social conditions across different historical periods. The question of textual authority and canonization lies at the center of this project.
